Central European Bronze Axe Head
Central European Bronze Axe Head
Item Details
Description
Central Europe, probably Hallstatt culture, ca. 8th to 6th century BCE. A cast bronze axe head of elongated form, with a deep groove on either side of its long tang and a narrow head that flares outward into a curved blade. The transition from the earlier Urnfield culture (ca. 1300 to 800 BCE) to the Hallstatt was not a clean break, and is marked archaeologically by a change in weaponry. Urnfield warriors were heavily armored and often mounted on chariots, wielding large weapons. Chiefs were expected to ride into battle and did so at the head of it. In contrast, Hallstatt warriors fought on horseback, wielding daggers and light axes. Size: 6.4" L (16.3 cm)

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection
