Description
Central / Southern Europe, Italic Bronze Age /e arly Iron Age, ca. 8th century BCE. A beautiful bronze four-spiral, or double spectacle, fibula. In the center is a once-square plate attached over the flattened central junction. The central plate has four raised ridges and a very shallow incised pattern in its center that resembles feathers or leaves. A catchplate is cast onto the back, with one end bent down to form a hook, the other coiled to form a pin. Spiral brooches seem to have been an almost Europe-wide fashion and are found in graves as markers of status from the Carpathians to western Europe. Imagine how beautiful this piece would have looked pinned to a cloak. Size: 5.5" W x 4.95" H (14 cm x 12.6 cm)
