[xiv], 304 pp. 43 illustrations including 18 half-tone photographs. (8vo) 21.2x14 cm (8¼x5½"), original light blue-green cloth. First Edition.
Riis' masterwork is considered one of the most important photographically illustrated books ever published, representing not only the first extensive use of halftone photographic reproductions in a book. but also Riis as one of the earliest photographers to use the image as a means to social reform. The present issue is quite rare, being a variant of the more common issue in half cloth and boards, which was slightly smaller (19.3x13.1 cm.) and printed on thinner paper. The present issue is on thicker paper, and was evidently a deluxe version. Priority is not established, if there was any. See The Photobook, p. 53. Small bookseller's sticker of W.B. Clarke & Co., Boston, to lower left corner of front free endpaper.
