Description
Civil War soldier E.A. Griffith's letter addressed to his sister and dated; "Verginnia (SIC) Feb the 22, 1861". Patriotic red, white and blue letterhead depicts George Washington waving a 13 star American flag dated 1776 while a flanking soldier in Zouave uniform waves an American flag dated 1861.
Content includes following references;
-"Jonson" (SIC) surrenders Clarksville if men do not take Rebel property.
-Rebels left Manassas and Centerville --not more than 30,000 at Richmond.
-Burnside is the man for us
-If we go on to ...Bull Run, Richmond...
-They sent 75 guns across the Potomac
-some shoot balls weighing 64 pounds
-the rest is light artillery
-etc.
Bi-fold letter written on a single sheet which folds vertically in the center to effectively form 4 manuscript pages. Approximate size when folded closed and showing entire front page is 5-1/4" X 7-5/8". Condition; toning, soiling, foxing spots, fold lines, stains. there is a tear line directly along the fold line of the top third of the letter about 3" long and affecting the entire letter thus all four pages.
