Description

Oceania, Solomon Islands, Rennell Island (Mugaba), ca. early 20th century CE. A fascinatingly-shaped dance club, hand-carved from dark wood and stained to be almost black in color. The upper portion is fan-like, with eight evenly-sized arms jutting outward. The lower half is openwork, composed of four thin wooden bars that meet at their top and bottom at diamond-shaped handles. Made for use in ritual and celebratory dances. Size: 4.25" W x 20.65" H (10.8 cm x 52.5 cm); 22.7" H (57.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Newport Beach, California, USA collection; ex-private UK collection
