Description
**Originally Listed At $350**
Nigeria, Ogoni people, ca. early 20th century CE. This is a small handcarved wood mask with a very prominent chin and and wide eyes. The ears seem to have some kind of jewellery carved around them. One of the things I find most interesting about this particular mask is that the drilled eyes resemble the eyes of pottery sculptures from a much earlier period in Nigerian history, the Nok culture (ca. 1000 BCE to 300 CE) -- rather than thinking of this mask as a artifact isolated in time, we can see it as a cultural continuum within Nigeria. Perhaps the maker of this mask was inspired by older art! Size: 4.25" W x 5.75" H (10.8 cm x 14.6 cm)
Provenance: Ex- Adeon Gallery, Nick Poolos, Chicago, IL acquired before 1970.
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
