Description
2 Dance Clubs/Wands, Napa, Santa Cruz, Solomon Islands, Early 20th C. The longer top example of traditional form and surface design shows significant wear from glossy patina on the handle and the overall darkened surface. The long crack running up its side is a vivid reminder of the bashing these clubs take during the napa ceremony. The second example is a highly unusual departure from the traditional napa wand form and must certainly have an interesting story to tell to justify its existence. Rather than the typical two raised triangular elements this wand possesses sixteen. Stylized fish prevail throughout the surface design. The shortened handle section displays darkening from ceremonial use. Minor chips and wear can be found on the club’s surface. From the collection of Joseph Salamanca. Size: 1) 33'' x 2'' x 2'' (84 x 5 x 5 cm); 2) 40'' x 2.5'' x 3'' (102 x 6 x 8 cm).
