Item Details
Description
Perez Melero (Spanish/Venezuelan, b. 1938), a matched pair of three dimensional mixed media works, 2002, signed and dated by the artist on the lower left. Two painstakingly made constructions comprised from paper, acrylic paint, and wood, each one presenting a mesmerizing composition of optical art that begs the viewer to observe it from multiple angles - each angle presenting a different picture. At times, one may see a non-objective work of strict formalist abstraction that draws upon the beauty of geometry. At other times, one sees a scene that recalls our historic past featuring two horse-drawn carriages heading in opposite directions along a quaint street with pedestrians to the side dressed in raincoats and holding umbrellas, perhaps about to be taken for a ride by the dapper coachmen donning white hats. A mesmerizing pair of artworks that are surprisingly simultaneously abstract and figural. Size: 21.75" L x 15.5" W (55.2 cm x 39.4 cm); 31" L x 25" W (78.7 cm x 63.5 cm) framed

In a recent interview, Melero stated, "Viewers should interact physically with my constructions. They need to walk around them and view them from different perspectives. Up close one can see the detailed and intricate methods of their construction. From further back, one can appreciate their total effect.

Color and light and how they interact are central to my work. Color is painted on pieces of wood attached to a high-contrast geometric background. Light penetrates between them, reflecting color from one to another and on the background. These reflected colors seem to mix in the air and produce an impression of others. As light sources change angle or intensity, and as the viewer moves around the work, new colors can be perceived even though they aren't really there. The interaction between color and light has produced an illusion. This relationship between color and light, in part, defines my work."

Perez Melero began his career in Venezuela, living and working there from the late 1950's until the early 1980's. Melero conducts workshops in Caracas and New York, and exhibits his work internationally. His mixed media works are in numerous collections including the Spanish Museum of Contemporary Art, CANTV, Fundarte, the White House, the American Institute of Architects, and the Women in Military Service to America Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery.

Provenance: private Andrade collection New York, NY, USA acquired 1960's; ex-Knoedler and Company
