Item Details
Description
Cemeli (unknown origin), John F. Kennedy Cubist Portrait, ca. 1960s. Signed in pencil by artist Cemeli on lower right and numbered VIII/XXV on lower left in the margin. An original color lithograph presenting a striking portrait of President John Fitzgerald "Jack" Kennedy as a 'sculpted head' in a Cubist style on Japan paper - with iconic facial features, coiffure, and contours delineated as a union of geometric elements set at various angles - all in a complementary color palette of slate blue, sienna, caramel beige, butter yellow, sky blue, and white - with each shape outlined in black, and the entire portrayal set against a shaded smokey blue ground comprised of gestural marks. Size: portrait measures 15.75" L x 12.375" W (40 cm x 31.4 cm); sheet measures 25.625" L x 19.625" W (65.1 cm x 49.8 cm)

John F. Kennedy, the 35th president of the United States elected in 1960, was 43-years-old at that time, becoming not only the youngest man but also the first Roman Catholic citizen to hold that esteemed office. Born into one of America’s most prestigious and wealthiest families, Kennedy parlayed his elite education and esteemed reputation as a military hero into a successful run for Congress in 1946, a Senate seat in 1952, and following this, the office of President in 1960. During his time in office, Kennedy faced threatening Cold War tensions in Cuba, Vietnam, and beyond. Famously stating, "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country," Kennedy also spearheaded a campaign for public service, and provided federal support for the Civil Rights movement. His tragic assassination on November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas shocked the world and instantly exalted Kennedy to heroic status. To this day, JFK continues to be revered as one of the most admired and beloved presidents of American history.
