Description
**First Time At Auction**
Western Africa, Nigeria, Igbo peoples, ca. mid 20th century CE. A wooden mask in the Okoroshi Oma style, hand-carved and narrow, to be worn atop the head rather than over the face. The mask's visage is long and painted white with some black and red pigment added on the cheeks and between the eyebrows. The eyes are small and narrowed, and the mouth is agape with two rows of sharpened teeth. A prominent lobed and black-painted coiffure is the most notable feature of this mask, with twisting braids outlining the head and areas of dark-blue paint along the scalp. Okoroshi Oma masks are white-faced, pretty masks meant to represent women water spirits; they are worn during the six month rainy season and represent the dualities associated with the feminine; there are complementary male spirit masks, which have black faces. Size: 3.75" W x 10.5" H (9.5 cm x 26.7 cm).
Provenance: ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA, acquired prior to 1970
