**First Time At Auction**

Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba, ca. mid 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden ritual sculpture depicting a figural head with wonderful detailing, including an expressive visage comprised of incised coffee bean shaped eyes, a pronounced nose, a slit mouth with parted lips as if talking, chanting, or singing, protruding ears, two bands of horizontally positioned ovoid scarification motifs adorning each cheek, and perhaps most striking, an elaborate, mohawk-style coiffure or headdress decorated with incised striated and zigzag motifs, with a pair of rectangular coiffure patches or scarification marks that are also adorned by striated and zigzag motifs just above the ears - all supported by a long neck with perforations at the lower end for attachment and a corseted base. Size: 13.375" H (34 cm); 13.875" H (35.2 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA acquired prior to 1970
