Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. 3rd to 2nd century BCE. A mold-made pottery owl, perched with its wings folded and head turned slightly to the side. The owl is a symbol of Athena, and often shown accompanying her; Athena was the patron of Athens, and so the owl became a symbol of Athens and its government. This type of figure may have been votive, given as an offering in a temple or kept at a home altar. Size: 2.75" W x 5.8" H (7 cm x 14.7 cm)
