Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A pair of unique, matching earrings that demonstrate the skill of Roman goldsmiths. Made from 16K gold, each has an upside-down teardrop form, divided into four, with pale, translucent glass inlays. These have a thick gold border studded at regular intervals with large granulations. They join the hooped clasp, with the joins wrapped in tight coils of very fine gold wire. Size: 1.65" H (4.2 cm); 8.1 grams
Roman women - especially of the upper classes - had their ears pierced and wore one set of earrings. Jewelry was particularly important to women in Roman society because it was legally their own property, independent of their husband's wealth, and they could use it as they saw fit.
Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

Condition
Both have bending to form as shown, with some encrustation and patina on surface. The glass has losses as shown. Amazingly, the clasps are still functional although you may wish to take these to a professional jeweler to have them fitted with something less delicate.
