Roman Bronze Handled Oinochoe - River Patina
Roman Bronze Handled Oinochoe - River Patina
Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A beautiful cast-bronze oinochoe, or pouring vessel, displaying a slight-concave base with a concentric circular design, an apple-shaped body with rolled shoulders, a wide, tubular neck, and a flared rim. The sinuous handle conjoins the body to the top of the rim, with a leaf-shaped terminal on the bottom, and a nubbin thumb rest projecting outwards just above the mouth. The golden bronze color of the vessel shines through the dense areas of pale and dark-green patina. This appearance is consistent with the vessel being found in or near a source of moving water - resulting in the golden hues, what is known as river patina. A fantastic vessel replete with gorgeous patina and characteristic Roman style! Size: 3.5" W x 5.1" H (8.9 cm x 13 cm).

Early Roman bronze oinochoe in good condition are rare. Here is an example from Christie's: http://www.christies.com/lotfinder/Lot/a-roman-bronze-trefoil-oinochoe-circa-1st-5747601-details.aspx
