Description
Roman or early Byzantine, ca. 5th to 7th century CE. A cast-bronze rectangular bread stamp with eight letters inscribed on its face and a loop handle with an additional knob on the verso. Bread stamps were an important piece of technology in the Classical world, used to signify that bread came from an authentic bakery or that it was intended for a specific family. There was also bread made to be freely distributed amongst the Roman populace, which was accordingly stamped with that information. Size: 2" W x 1.75" H (5.1 cm x 4.4 cm).

Condition
Age-commensurate surface wear, with minor area of loss to top of knob. Small nicks to stamp, ring, and knob, otherwise very good. Nice green and russet patina throughout.
