Description
Byzantine Empire, ca. 6th to 10th century CE. A very rare and remarkable bronze and iron bread stamp. Bronze trapazoidal plate with deeply carved grooves in the form of two confronting angels with a cross between. Iron handle attached onto reverse. Stamps such as this were used to identify the bakery where bread was produced - a very early form of labeling and marketing. Size: 3-5/8"W.
