Description
2-piece cream satin printed with polychrome roses embossed with velour and trimmed in pale apricot satin, back lacing bodice having ruched cap sleeve, wide V-neck with pleats and shoulder bows, deep front and back points; trained bustle skirt with apricot front panel having pleats and horizontal ruching, the overskirt with weighted side points, back pouf with large bows, long curved train backed with satin and pleated gauze with lace trim, inside ties. Tag states "Worn by Queen Louise of Denmark Wife of Frederick VIII of Denmark Daughter of Louise of Sweden". Purchased at Christie's auction, July 11, 1967, Lot 139, bid through Doris Langley Moore, included copy of Christie's catalog listing and photo. Purchased at Christie's Auction July 11, 1967. Helen Larson called this auction the "Queen's Auction" due to so many objects with royal provenance in the sale. The ensemble was part of a larger group of objects cataloged as follows: "The majority of the following dresses were the property of the late Princess Marie Elizabeth of Wied of Schloss Monrepos, Neuwied (b. 1880); many earlier dresses belonged to her grandmother, Princess Louise of PrussiaĂ¢â‚¬. B-32, W-24, L 43-80. (Losses to tulle around neckline, some trim removed, corsages likely replaced, open seams and fraying to one shoulder, missing back laces, skirt missing bow, few stains to front panel of skirt) good.
