Madame de Pompadour was an influential member of the French court during the reign of Louis XV. This collection of fictitious letters is titled as ‘Letters of Madame de Pompadour;’ however, these works of correspondence have since been attributed to François Crebillon, Marquis de Barbé-Marbois. According to Querard,
“These Letters had a great popularity, and they were attributed in time to Crebillon fils. These Letters are full of decency and sown with very piquant anecdotes; they contain political views superior to those of which the author of Tanzaï and Sopha had to be animated”
