Description
**First Time At Auction**
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A striking pilgrim flask, with a deep cobalt blue body of an elegant flattened teardrop shape, a graduated tubular neck that resolves in a generous rolled rim, as well as a pair of sinuous translucent, aqua/blue-green trail handles joining neck to shoulders. Pilgrim flasks like this example were made by blowing a flask of a standard shape and then compressing it to a flattened form. The name of this vessel derives from the canteen-like bottles once carried by pilgrims. Scholars have also suggested that flasks like this were used as holy oil containers. Size: 5.125" H (13 cm); 5.375" H (13.7 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection
