Description
A very nice plated Conductor lantern with a presentation engraving on the lid to "PRESENTED TO T. S. HEALD By HIS EMPLOYEES & FRIENDS on the BOSTON BARRE & GARDNER RAILROAD DEC. 1877. This lantern field strips to its base components. The pot does not stay on the bell. The lantern comes apart by lining up a joint in the lid to a pin on the top assembly. The cage then folds down. This lantern does not have a globe. The globe is a unique size. I tried several spares (6 different) with no luck on a match. The globe should measure: 3 1/8" base diameter, 2 1/2" top diameter 3 3/4" visible area and then an extended base on top of that. The frame needs cleaning and shows minor dings and dents.
The Boston Barre & Gardner Railroad was a Massachusetts central area shortline that ran from Worcester to Gardner. It never ran to Boston or Barre. This is a Boston & Maine predecessor that is currently run by the Providence & Worcester (or who ever took them over - G&W?). .
