Battle report in manuscript, by Union Capt. R. W. Bannatyne. Morris Island, S.C. August 10, 1864. 4to, 4 leaves. Bound with ribbon at upper margin, light blue wove paper with areas of fading/toning, two horizontal creases as folded, Very Good. *************************** Capt. Bannatyne offers his account of the failed attack on Fort Johnson near Morris Island in South Carolina. Some ships landed while others retreated, causing not only the failure of the operation but also the capture of many Union troops. The debacle lead to an inquiry, and officers were required to give their account of events. As evidenced by the present report, there was a high level of confusion on approach, and Capt. Bannatyne's ship was one of those whose retreated: "I had previous heard the order to retreat but do not know who g[a]ve it whether an officer or not did not consider it Authority to retreat on. I then gave the order to retreat and returned to Paines Dock...."
