Item Details
Description
Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A fine, old example of a dorje, also known as a vajra. The dorje, an instantly recognizable symbol of Tibetan Buddhism, represents the moment of Enlightenment. This example is rare in that it is not the double cage form, but rather one openwork cage that sits atop a head of the Prince Siddhartha complete with large, three-pointed crown and serene face. Below the head is a large ring terminating in a flat disc. This disc sits atop a wooden stand. Vajra means both thunderbolt and diamond, symbolizing an irresistible force and indestructibility. In ceremony, the dorje/vajra is almost always paired with a bell. Size: 1.3" W x 3.65" H (3.3 cm x 9.3 cm); 4.2" H (10.7 cm) on included custom stand.
