Description
**Originally Listed At $400**
Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. This is a fine cast-bronze ceremonial bell known as a dorje (vajra) that is replete with Buddhist symbolism. The handle finial represents half of a dorje, a ribbed form that is symbolic of lightening or a diamond and supporting the 4 ribs of openwork is an anthropomorphic figure representing "Transcendent Insight." The sloped shoulder of the bell is adorned with relief characters, below is a register of stylized faces and auspicious symbols encircling the domed body, and along the rim is a band of dorjes. The original clapper is still suspended within the bell cavity, and fine patina covers both bell and handle - a lovely devotional instrument used in recitation. Condition
Minor abrasions to bell body and handle, otherwise intact and very good. Nice patina throughout. Clapper still creates a nice ringing sound when it strikes the interior walls of the bell body.
