Pre-Columbian, Jaina Island, Mexico, Maya, ca. 600 to 900 CE. A mold-made terracotta rattle in the form of an elite Mayan standing chieftain donning an elaborate headdress upon his long, straight coiffure, large earspools, a beaded necklace, beaded bracelets, and a fancy costume. The instrument also contains several miniscule rattle balls that emit sound when shaken. Jaina Island, a small limestone island on the Yucatan Peninsula's Gulf coast, has only a tiny inlet separating it from the mainland. Jaina served as an elite Maya burial site and is notable for its fine ceramic figurines excavated around the island. Size: 8.375" H (21.3 cm).
