Description
Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Jaina / Campeche, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 600 to 850 CE. A charming pair of mold-made pottery rattle in the form of standing figures. The first is a woman in a warm orange hued terracotta, her hollow body stands upright on a flat base with a vent hole that also enabled pebbles to be inserted inside for the rattle, and her face. The other figure is probably representative of a dwarf, her facial features presenting a prominent forehead, flattened nasal bridge, and a stub nose. Her facial features and adornments- earrings and necklaces are well defined with remains of a white and blue pigments. Size (female figure): 3" L x 2.25" W x 7.5" H (7.6 cm x 5.7 cm x 19 cm); (dwarf figure): 4" L x 2.25" W x 7.5" H (10.2 cm x 5.7 cm x 19 cm)
