Shake, rattle, and roll

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Jaina Island, Maya, ca. 600 to 900 CE. Mold-made terracotta rattle representing an elite Mayan donning an elaborate headdress, large ear ornaments, and fanciful pectoral, holding a child offering, from Jaina Island, a small limestone island on the Yucatan Peninsula's Gulf coast with only a tiny inlet separating it from the mainland. Jaina served as an elite Maya burial site and is notable for the fine ceramic figurines that have been excavated there. Size: 3.125" W x 6.75" H (7.9 cm x 17.1 cm)
