Description
**First Time At Auction**

Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A pair of cast bronze figural handles from vessels. The first is a swan's head, with details of feathers and a lifelike face, atop a curved handle form that flares outward at its lower terminal into a floral shape. Swans and other waterfowl were very common artistic decorations in the Classical World, although the reason for why that it is is not entirely clear. The second is a standing nude figure of a woman, perhaps representing the goddess Aphrodite, who leans one arm against a curved bar that would have been used for attachment to a vessel. Size of largest (woman, although they are very close in size): 3.45" H (8.8 cm); 4.5" H (11.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex Denenberg Fine Arts, Los Angeles, California, USA
