Description
**Originally Listed At $300**
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. Finely cast via the lost wax (cire perdue) process, an elegant bronze handle, perhaps for a hydria vessel, with twin swan heads at either end. The swan played a complex role in Greek and Roman mythology - as an attribute of Venus/Aphrodite and Apollo, said to sing a song of unearthly beauty as it died, and as the form assumed by Zeus to ravish Leda, mother of Helen of Troy. A wonderful example with fabulous patina throughout. Size: 5.3" W x 2.75" H (13.5 cm x 7 cm)
Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010
