Description
A depiction of Christopher Columbus's arrival in Hispaniola and his first encounter with the people of the island set in a page of text from the famous deBry edition of Benzoni's History of the New World. Columbus and his men are shown exchanging goods with the cacique (chieftain) Guacanacari. In the background, Spaniards erect a cross and Taino indians flee while three Spanish ships are moored offshore.
