Description
Jansson's magnificent map of Puerto Rico and the Lesser Antilles is one of the earliest printed maps to focus on the Caribbean. As the map is oriented with north to the left and east at the top, Puerto Rico is found in the lower left corner. The map's decorative elements include several ships at sea, a dramatic cartouch featuring sea deities and creatures, and a African figure holding up the mileage scale.
Johannes Jansson /Jan Janssonius (1588-1664) was a Dutch cartographer and publisher active in the 17th century who lived and worked in Amsterdam.
