Description
On "Rutland & Washington, and Troy & Rutland Railroads, President & Superintendents' Office, Rutland, Vt." letterhead, dated July 8th, 1862, to EA Chapin, R&B RR (Rutland & Burlington) of Rutand, VT, regarding takeover of Capt. F.H. Fulper's Rensselaer & Saratoga RR and John H Landen's Saratoga & Whitehall RR. Signed as President of the R&W/T&R lines.
Jay Gould was one of the greatest Robber Barons of the 19th c., speculating mostly on railroads. This documents one of his earliest important takeovers, at the age of 26, firmly establishing himself as ruthless in business deals, soon leading to his failed attempt to take over the Erie Railroad, and a near invasion of Canada by Minnesota after Gould was arrested for kidnapping a rival.
