West Africa, Benin, Fon peoples, early 20th century CE. A hand carved, wooden male figure with a tenon, made to be held by hand during a ritual dance. The Fon people (Fon nu) are known for making wooden statues that are known as bocio, used by individual families for protection; they are rubbed with palm oil as a prayer to the ancestors. Size: 4.5" W x 27" H (11.4 cm x 68.6 cm)
Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970.
