Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Sumatra, Batak peoples, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A tall and intriguing sculpture, hand-carved from hard wood, depicting a male figure seated atop an integral plinth. The figure sits with both arms holding either his tongue or a lengthy instrument up to his open mouth. The ovoid head boasts bar-shaped ears, rounded eyes, a broad nose, and a rounded brow. The forehead is extremely tall and is wrapped with a coiling serpent decorated with incised lattice-style patterns. The symbol of the snake in Batak culture is a means of protecting individuals within a structure from evil spirits. Size: 4.5" W x 30.375" H (11.4 cm x 77.2 cm).

Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, small chips to face, snake, body, and peripheries, with fading to some carved details, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits throughout. Mounted on top of verso with metal suspension bracket.
