Description
**First Time At Auction**
Oceania, Papua New Guinea, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A finely carved wooden walking stick or ceremonial staff depicted with an integral serpent winding its way around the body of the cane, its head presented with two eyes embellished with white pigment - perhaps kaolin derived. The handle is skillfully incised with an upper register of repeated trios of feather plumes (perhaps those of the beloved cassowary bird) above a register of repeated crosses - with a zigzag border above and below. The recesses of these carvings are also embellished with white pigment. Size: 37" L (94 cm)
Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
