Item Details
Description
Oceania, Papua New Guinea, ca. early 20th century CE. This little piggy went to market . . . A hand-carved wooden pig - quite an adorable little guy standing on all fours with his protruding round snout pointed downwards as if sniffing something savory ahead. Perky ears, almond-shaped eyes, and a curved tail add to his charm. Nice remains of black and white pigment remain on the surface. Pigs are incredibly important animals to the native people of Papua New Guinea, one of the few mammals on the island, and they are bred for food as well as being used as a sign of social status. Size: 12.375" L x 4.875" H (31.4 cm x 12.4 cm)
