North America, Native American, Southwestern USA, Hopi, ca. 1960 CE. A bright and colorful katsina doll, carved from wood and outfitted with bright painted surfaces, yarn, dried grass stalks, and feathers. The katsina represents the Katsinam, ancestral beings which roam the spirit world. This particular example is representative of a cricket, with grass bundles and feathers indicative of ears, and a face comprised of circular eyes, mouth, and eyebrows. Comes with accompanying crescent-moon wooden base. Size: 10.625" H (27 cm).
