Native American, southwestern United States, Arizona and New Mexico, Hopi peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A fine gathering of 17 hand-carved wooden Kachina (also Katsina) dolls in a variety of forms including corn dancers, birds of prey, and messengers. Each figure stands either on delineated legs or fused conical legs with a central groove and exhibits vibrant pigments that create unique attire. Some figures are adorned with feathers atop their heads or display elaborate panels projecting from one or both temples. Size of largest (corn dancer): 2.4" W x 5.9" H (6.1 cm x 15 cm)

Provenance: private Colgate, Wisconsin, USA collection, acquired between the 1970s and 1990s

Repairs to ear projections of two smaller figures as well as largest figure, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines; remaining figures are intact and very good. All items have minor abrasions to legs, bodies, and heads, with some having lost some feathers atop heads, and light fading to some painted areas. Nice remains of pigment throughout.
