Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Greater Nicoya region, ca. 600 to 1000 CE. The indigenous artists of the northwest coast of Costa Rica had an uncanny penchant for bringing magical creatures to life - particularly the mighty jaguar. Note how the fierce attitude of the jaguar is communicated by this vessel through the animal's bloody fangs, powerful legs, and lunging head. What's more the creator of this piece was an artist who moved beyond realism. First off, the figure is standing upright in a vertical pose not possible for an animal, but more akin to a human pose. Most fascinating, notice the pair of serpentine or avian creatures emerging from the upper ends of the front paws and a similar though smaller one just above the hollow foot on the back. Perhaps this piece is intended to represent a shamanic vision or transformation. Size: 7.375" W at widest point x 13" H (18.7 cm x 33 cm)

Furthermore, the artisan reveled in abstraction, covering the piece with intricately designed patterns. The spotted jaguar's pelt for example is further adorned by concentric circles, curvilinear, zigzags, and linear motifs on the haunches, head, and chest. Additional bands of decoration circumambulate the upper portion of the vessel - including a wide register featuring a cross beneath a bold double zigzag motif against a spotted ground with dotted circles bordering the zigzag and occupying the field. Complementing this are more decorative bands - with striations, geometric pseudo glyphs, and sinuous interlacing serpentine forms gracing the surface. Quite remarkable is how the vessel actually captures the sound of the jaguar. Clay balls in the mouth and legs rattle when the piece is carried or moved in any way - metaphorically replicating the roar of the beast or possibly meant to enhance the musical performances of Pre-Columbian rituals.
