Description
Prayer book for all year with Kavanat Ha'Ari. Lemberg, 1866. On the title page, the handwritten signature of the Kabbalist Rabbi "Yosef Waltuch of Jerusalem".
The Kabbalist Rabbi Yosef Waltuch immigrated to the Land of Israel with his family when he was eight year sold. He lived in the Old City of Jerusalem and studied at the Etz Chaim yeshiva. He was never seen without a book in his hand and used to study 14, even 18, hours a day! Every day he used to steal into the "Beit El" Yeshiva for kabbalists and watch their behavior. It is told of Rabbi Waltuch that he refused to sleep in a bed but used to doze while studying. He also used to pray "Vatikin" and lay four pairs of Tefillin - Rashi, Rabeinu Tam, Ravad and "Shimusha Rabba". He was known as being knowledgeable in all fields of the Pardes [Peshat, Remez, Derash, Sod]. He used to sign his name "Yosef Waltuch the grandson of the Maggid of Zlotshov" since his father was a descendent of Rabbi Yechiel Michel of Zlotshov.

Rabbi Yosef lived in Tel Aviv, earning his livelihood by cleaning its streets, and was thus known as "The Street Cleaner". He belonged to a Kabbalistic group who clandestinely studied together and were named after their professions: “The Shoemaker†- Rabbi Moshe Ya'akov Ravikov, “the Milkman†- Rabbi Chaim Ezra Cohen, "the Floorlayer" - Rabbi Avraham Fish and Rabbi Yehuda Patilon - "The Holy Artist".
He used to travel to the graves of Tzaddikim to pray, even when they were located in dangerous places, and to the Western Wall [while it was under Jordanian occupation] and many times he travelled to Rashbi's grave in Meron to pray or to arrange a feast in his honor. He used to visit the Kabbalist Mordechai Sharabi every week and often met with Rabbi Meir Abuhatzeira and the Rebbe Rabbi Moshe Mordechai Biderman of Lalov. In order to discover hidden Tzaddikim, he asked the Kabbalist Rabbi Ben Zion Moshe Ya'ir Weinstock to write down the address of any Jew who bought rare Kabbalh books from him and send the books with him. Rabbi Waltuch himself always held two simple-looking baskets in which he hid ancient and rare Kabbalah books.
Rabbi Yosef was known as a wonder-worker and reputedly saw Eliyahu Ha'Navi during every Brit Milah he participated in. he died in 1983 and is buried on the Mount of Olives.
After Rabbi Meir Abuhatzeira's death in Nissan 1983, he said that he could not live without Rabbi Meir. Three days before Lag Ba'Omer, he travelled to pray beside graves of Tzaddikim in the Galilee. When he left the grave of Rashbi in Meron he said he was not feeling well. When he reached the cave of the Idra in Safed, he again said he was not feeling well. A few moments later, he fainted and was brought to the hospital of Safed, where he died a few hours later. The next morning he was buried on the Mount of Olives.
