Description
**Originally Listed At $200**

West Africa, Nigeria, Chamba peoples, early 20th century CE. A simple, stylized human female figure, carved from a single piece of wood and smoothed. Small black and red beaded chains go around the neck and the waist. The Chamba venerate statues of both males and females; these small statues are seen as both stand-ins for deceased ancestors and for dangerous spirits who could take on human-like appearances. Their meaning depends on context and the identity of the viewer. Size: 2.8" W x 9.35" H (7.1 cm x 23.7 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970.
