Item Details
Description
West Africa, Middle Benue River Valley, Nigeria, Mumuye peoples, ca. 1970s CE. A superb and sizable hand-carved wooden female ancestral figure standing atop a pair of short, delineated legs with pointed knees. The statue bears protruding hips and incised genitalia below a narrow waist, a lengthy, slender abdomen with a carved starburst-motif navel, protruding breasts, stocky shoulders, and wing-like arms draped at her sides. The tapered neck supports a massive head which features bulging annular eyes atop incised striations representing ceremonial scarification or face paint, a petite triangular nose, an incised mouth, and a projecting chin. A hemispherical helmet or headdress caps the head of the fascinating figure, presenting an incised periphery, hanging panels on the sides of her face, and a high crest at the top. Her arms and shoulders are adorned with a row of carved diamond-motifs, perhaps intended to indicate a patterned garment or ritualistic cicatrizes. Espresso-hued natural pigment is visible across the entire figure, and smooth patina has formed in areas where the pigment has worn away. Size: 5.75" W x 19.25" H (14.6 cm x 48.9 cm)

The Mumuye create figures known as "iagalagana," entities who represent ancestral spirits, who provide instructions to new initiates of their secret society. Their abstract presentation reflects the role of the iagalagana as outside of the human world and the realm of physical existence.
