Description
An erotic Roman oil lamp depicting a woman and a hound, Cypriot, c. AD 200 - 250, the discus with quite the unusual sex depicting a hounded laying on a couch mounted by a nude woman, with decorative border and incised lines around shoulder; the underside of lamp with marker's mark EPMIANO hand incised in two lines within a circle. A known lamp maker whose production center was either Curium or Salamis in Cyprus. L: 3 1/3 in (8.4cm). Such an interesting and rarely depicted scene involving bestiality, probably just light humor. Cf. Bailey, Lamps in the British Museum III: Provincial Lamps, nos. Q2491 and 2 for lamps from this maker. Ex collection of Prof. Alan Pasch, Maryland.
