Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, Chinesco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. An unusual bichrome pottery effigy vessel in the form of a curled up animal - deemed an embryonic canine - standing upon four legs with a pointy tail, spotted coat, and wide eyed expression. Interestingly, the spotted coat suggests associations with the jaguar; scholars believe that the jaguar's spotted coat symbolized the starry night sky in the Pre-Columbian era. A very unusual example. Size: 5.75" W x 3.25" H (14.6 cm x 8.3 cm)
