A very rare and fascinating wooden "VABO" mask from the Mumuye peoples of Nigeria, West Africa. Vabo masks may be carved for a new initiates in the secret society which have demonstrated its prowess and is considered worthy of owning the masquerade and keeping its secrets.Vabo masquerades punish antisocial behavior and chase away criminals. Individual names given to each mask underscore their aggressive qualities.Vabo's most important manifestation may occur during men's funerals. During these ceremonies Vabo masqueraders and their attendants gather ceramic vessels from the homes of all the men who have died during the year. Identified with the forest buffalo the masks have slit cylindrical jaws and conical eyes, and are painted with a red organic mineral pigment. The Mask measures 17 x 7.5 inches.
