Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chancay culture, ca. 1200 to 1400 CE. A carved wooden post topped by a finial of a standing lord. He wears a tall headdress and a tunic textured with a zigzag pattern that calls to mind the form of a pyramid. The rest of the post is simple, long and narrow, pierced regularly by three square mortises for attachment to a litter. Litters were used to carry royalty and other nobility, and in funerary processions four men would carry a symbolic empty litter to symbolize the dead.
