Ledger leaf, dated 1793, signed twice (front and back) by William Ellery. 14.5" x 6". Horizontal creases as folded, moderate age-tone, some light soiling and marginal chipping, one panel on rear rather soiled and somewhat obscuring Ellery's signature (which is located atop one of the creases as well). ********************************* William Ellery was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence as a representative of Rhode Island. Later in his career, and until his death, he was the first customs collector of Newport, Rhode Island. The present leaf, taken from a ledger, is an "Account of fees received in the port of Warren and Barrington (Rhode Island) to be divided betwixt the Collect or Naval Officer and Surveyor." The same text appears as the heading on both sides, followed by a list of names, locations, and amounts - signed by Ellery, recto and verso.
