Description
Collection of Eli Smith items, purchased from the estate of Margaret R. Leavy -- great grand daughter and researcher of Eli Smith. Eli Smith (1801 - 1857) was an American Protestant missionary who travelled extensively in the Middle East. He is known for bring the first printing press with Arabic type to Syria, though he considered his life's work to be the translation of the Bible into Arabic. He died before he could complete the translation, but Cornelius Van Alen Van Dyck of the Syrian Mission finished the work. ******** Included in this archive of material are the following: ******** Several books related to Smith's work (some written by him) including three with the bookplate of Eli Smith to the pastedown: Missionary Sermons and Addresses (by Eli Smith, Boston, 1833), Memoir of Mrs. Sarah Lanman Smith, Late of the Mission in Syria (by Edward Hooker, London, 1839, and another copy being the Boston ed. of 1839), The Rule and Exercises of Holy Living (Boston, 1820), Trials of Missionaries, An Address... (by Eli Smith, Boston, 1832) *** A commonplace book with manuscript entries of lecture notes and some verse, with a small envelope laid in containing two locks of hair. No attribution of the manuscript is found. *** Several modern pamphlets or offprints related to Eli Smith. *** 3 19th c. photos and one 19th c. print, including a photo depicting a crowd at a ceremony in Syria at the raising of a monument for the first girl's school, photo of a sign for the room in which the "Translation of the Bible into the Arabic Language was Begun..." and a photo of the Smith homestead. *** A modern photocopy of Smith's Arabic Bible. *** All items vary in condition, from Poor to Very Good. As-is.
