Colima Mace Pottery Jar
Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built redware pottery vessel of a rather unusual form. When gripped at the neck and held upside down, the vessel resembles a fierce mace or hand axe, its protruding 'head' poised to cause some damage. A fascinating example alluding to the use of weaponry by the indigenous of West Mexico. Size: 7" W x 9.625" H (17.8 cm x 24.4 cm)

Provenance: collection of the late Alfred E. Stendahl, Stendahl Gallery, Los Angeles, California, USA

Condition
Normal surface wear commensurate with age. Hairline surface fissure on one side, otherwise superb. Nice areas of manganese deposits grace the surface as well.
