Description
**Originally Listed At $250**
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, El Chanal, Post-Classic period, ca. 1250 to 1550 CE. A hand-built pottery jar with a rounded base, a globular body, a tall spout with a lightly-flared rim, and a trio of applied suspension loops - one on the chin and two on the verso. The front depicts a stylized anthropomorphic visage with coffee-bean eyes, a tab-shaped nose, raised parallel lips, and large ear spools, all beneath the arching brim of a helmet. The spout has a trio of conical protrusions which, when coupled with the incised crescents between each, resemble a second minimalist face. Beneath the calcifications are traces of original orange and red pigment, suggesting this was at one time vibrantly decorated. Size: 4.625" W x 5.8" H (11.7 cm x 14.7 cm).
Provenance: private Andrade collection, New York, New York, USA, acquired in the 1960s; ex-private New York, New York, USA collection
