Pre-Columbian, Oaxaca, Mexico, Zapotec culture, Monte Alban, ca. 100 BCE to 200 CE. A dramatic, bulbous-bodied figural bottle with a wide spout ending in a slightly flared rim. Attached to the body are the head, arms and feet of a lord or possibly a shaman. His head and incredible headdress is attached to the neck; he has a distinctly jaguar-like mouth and wears two enormous spooled earrings in addition to his plumed headdress, which is capped by a serpent head. He has an enormous necklace with dangling pectorals that cover much of his chest, and two projecting arms that point downward and have fine details like fingernails. This is an example of one of the famous forms of Monte Alban pottery, made from crema paste ceramics. These elaborately decorated items were produced as prestige items and local lords in the Monte Alban area received them via gift-giving networks that reinforced the power of the Zapotec lords.
